Valentines Day 2019
It's Valentines Day and I had a day of Kindies and third graders. The kindergarteners sang the book Mail Myself to You by Woodie Guthrie at the the start of art business each day of their rotation to practice. They did a great job learning the song and keeping our BIG secret! We carefully wrapped a student in the big paper like a present! Then we took the present to their am teacher and sang the song. When the teacher opened the present everyone squeeled in delight. Priceless!!! They also finished up their line drawing unit with Valentine Cats. Then my third graders discussed ways they could share their heart and bring kindness to those around them. They brainstormed some great ideas. Then we broke into groups of four. Created beautiful hearts and cut them into four pieces. The students "shared their heart" with their group. We hung up the finish pieces as a commitment to kindness. Later in February, first and second graders did an across grade project we called Buddy-flies. One group painted the paper for the background of the butterflies and the second used painted paper and scraps to add special details. Students know their buddy's name and are on the lookout for their airtist buddy! Kindness matters.

They were a huge hit and students read Dr. Seuss books to Odie all day!!!! Thank you Ms.Joan! Kids rotated through reading to Odie and drawing the Cat-in-the-Hat! They read like an artist! Artists have studio habits that help them in art and life. Those same habits can even be used to read!!!

October 2019, Guatemala
This October we studied Guatemalan Art and the giant cubist murals of Carlos Merida. Students listened to the Marimba, the national instrument of Guatemala as we created our multi-media masterpieces including: masks, worry dolls, watercolor and collage cubism pieces, quilled reticulated Quetzals (the national bird or Guatemala), textile arts and embroidery. Our "Art of Guatemala" is on display at the Douglas County Library in Parker through December 9th. Afternoon students did an outstanding job planning and creating their "World Traveler" W.O.W. projects. You are invited to view these wonderful original works on display in the art cases through mid-December. The GVA Art students and I continue to enjoy our monthly grant from Jerry Silverhart Farmer's Insurance. This month club met on October 31st and used alcohol ink to create beautiful floral bowls.“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” Edgar Degas

Playing With Art
Inspired by the coming Lunar New Year of the Pig, my wonderful kids thought up a great idea. All four fabulous first grade classes created scenery and paper puppets for the story The Three Little Pigs. They had a great time playing with their creations and telling and retelling the story. After class, they headed off to French, Mandarin, and Spanish classes to try it out in their target language (Thanks teachers!). It's always fun to double or triple-dip standards. This happens naturally in art. Ask your artist about the big ideas. I love to combine art with math, science, language arts and writing, history, civics, and of course geography. Learning is fun! -Mrs. Steers

September in the GVA Art Studio
In September we studied Ireland and Mildred Butler's Irish landscapes. Students listened to Celtic music and magical Irish folktales as we created our multi-media masterpieces, fairy houses and Celtic knot lino prints. Our "Art of Ireland" is on display at the Douglas County Library in Parker through November 7th. C-day afternoon students did an outstanding job planning and creating their "World Traveler" W.O.W. projects. You are invited to view these wonderful original works on display in the art cases through October. The last week in September was prize patrol week! The GVA Art students and I received a grant from Groove Auto for $3,500.00!!!! I will be using the money to add i-Pads to the art studio for some cool technology and art projects (animation, electronic student portfolios, tutorials.....) in the near future! Later that week I received the Farmer's Insurance "Thank America's Teachers" award and gift basket from Jerry Silverhart Farmer's Insurance. When they found out it was the same day as the fun run they brought along tons of waters and cookies for everyone! Thank you Harber Family for the wonderful nomination and awards. A big thank you too our "Art Ambassador" students for another successful month of bring art to our friends, the residents of the Victorian House. This month we used alcohol ink to create beautiful floral bowls.
