August 2018 in the GVA Art Studio
Welcome back my wonderful artists! This month we started things off with a parent/child collaborative mural, "LEARNING NEVER STOPS" at the Dragon Breakfast. The mural celebrates our commitment to growth mindset at GVA. The mural is now proudly on display in the north stairwell. This month we began our Puerto Rico project and studied the art of Ashley Percival. His murals are currently on display in the London Tube! See our multi-media versions of his anthropomorphic animals on display here at GVA. Thank you "Art Ambasodor" students for another successful meeting to share art with the residents at the Victorian House!

March 2019 in the Art Studio, Cameroon
This month students were inspired by Cameroon! Cameroon is known as little Africa because all the biomes found throughout the continent are found there. Sixth grade studied and painted the natural beauty large scale in collaborative groups. Other students researched the wild animals and the artwork found on postage stamps. This inspired us to depict them in various mediums. We also researched and studied the beautiful textiles and fabrics and tried our hand at circle weaving and watercolor resist batik. Thank you to Mr. Nkamla for all the guidance, support and willingness to teach me about his beloved country. Thank you Mrs. Nkamla and the Cameroonian community for all you did to make International Day so special! We all love and appreciate your Cameroon. In the GVA Art Studio we create world peace one piece at a time.

February 2019, Ireland International Day
We are learning about the green countryside and cities of Ireland, its shamrocks, leprechauns and the butterflies of spring. Younger student have studied the woolen weavers of Ireland. We read "Weaving the Rainbow" and created circle weavings on colorful flower looms. Abstract city's represent Dublin and Ireland's largest population. Older students studied heraldry. They researched, planned and created a personal coat-of-arms. Every single motto, symbol, color and support animal tells the story of them and their family. I loved hearing all the things that are important to each student, what their families have taught them and what they value most. Every single coat-of-arms is a treasure. I will be framing them for the GVA ART SHOW and SALE, May 9th. Save the date!

January 2019, Rainbow Village, Taiwan
Rainbow Village all started with a single bird! Amateur artist and Grandpa, Huang Yung Fu used art to save his village and changed his life. Students loved working collaboratively to create our own Rainbow Village. They also created oil pastel birds, acrylic paintings, village houses and lots and lots of lanterns! Fourth through seventh graders did some "world traveler," planning their own projects and painted found items in the Rainbow Village style. Everything from shoes, toys and recyclables to guitars and a semi piston now radiate colorful happiness. A highlight for me was watching a student paint, "I love my life." on his bike helmet.

November and December 2018, Germany
Check out the beautiful oil Pastel and watercolor turkeys for Thanksgiving! This time we learned about Germany and the painter Gabrielle Munter and her wintery scenes of Germany. Third grades made a mural of her Cabin in the Woods. Students were inspired by markt lebkuchenherzen (traditional German heart cookies), tannenbaum (Christmas trees), Marzipan Glückschwein (Lucky Pigs), Sankt Nikolaus and the international display was set up in a style reminiscent of a Christmas market or Weihnachtsmärkte. Sixth graders created working cardboard cuckoo clocks!!! Thank you Jerry Silverhart Farmers Insurance for the monthly teacher grant which purchased the clockworks and wooden hearts for the cookies.

Beautiful Oops Day!
It’s OK to make a mistake. In fact, hooray for mistakes! They are an important part of learning and our growth mindset in the Art Studio. Today we read Beautiful Oops! by Barney Saltzberg and made fabulous creations from paper scraps and oopsy artwork. This book shows the joy of taking a mistake and turning it into something fabulous. The story Beautiful Oops! is filled with pop-ups, lift-the-flaps, tears, holes, overlays, bends, smudges, and even an accordion “telescope”—each demonstrating the magical transformation from blunder to wonder. Its an art room treasure!!! "Creativity takes courage." -Henry Matisse

Beautiful Oops Day!
Today we read "The Beautiful Oops!" by Barney Saltzberg and were inspired to create something from paper scraps and painted paper mistakes. Mistakes are part of our growth mindset. "It’s OK to make a mistake. In fact, hooray for mistakes! A mistake is an adventure in creativity, a portal of discovery. A spill doesn’t ruin a drawing—not when it becomes the shape of a goofy animal. And an accidental tear in your paper? Don’t be upset about it when you can turn it into the roaring mouth of an alligator.
